The State of child care currently presents several problems to families, employers and the local community:
Lack of quality care - 48% of Arizona is in a child care desert. In Arizona there are more than 304,000 children birth to five, however the amount of child care slots available is less than 204,000, making child care for families extremely difficult to find.
Cost of care - The cost of child care has increased significantly and families are unable to afford care. Families spend 12-32% of their income on child care. A year of infant costs as much as a year of State college tuition.
Finding care presents several challenges to employers, 35% of people have left a job due to child care and 82% have missed work. These issues lead into lower retention and higher turnover for employers and more costs for training new employees.
