One of the lessons we’ve learned over time is that housing alone does not always guarantee stability. Many veterans who are currently housed still face serious challenges with home repairs they can no longer physically manage or financially afford. Issues such as leaking sinks, failing plumbing, and dry rot caused by long-term water damage can quietly worsen, creating unsafe living conditions over time.

This realization led to the creation of Operation BOB—a JAVC program designed to assist veterans throughout Mohave County with essential home repairs that restore safety, dignity, and long-term stability.

How Operation BOB Began
Last year, we met Bob, an 85-year-old U.S. Navy veteran in declining health. After losing his wife several years ago, Bob was doing everything he could to support another veteran in desperate need of housing. Despite his own challenges, he continued to put others first.

When we visited Bob’s mobile home, it became clear that he, too, needed help. Years of water leaks from his sink and bathtub had caused significant dry rot and structural deterioration, particularly in the kitchen. The damage had created unsafe living conditions that could no longer be ignored.

Community in Action
Thanks to the generosity of Home Depot and the dedication of the JAVC volunteer service team, we were able to step in and make critical repairs. The team removed and replaced damaged flooring, repaired compromised subflooring, and rebuilt the kitchen—restoring both safety and functionality to Bob’s home.

What made this project especially meaningful was witnessing the community come together to support a veteran who has spent his life serving others.

Why Operation BOB Matters
Operation BOB is about meeting veterans where they are. It recognizes that dignity, safety, and stability do not stop at the front door—they depend on the condition of the home itself.

Through this program, we aim to prevent minor issues from becoming dangerous situations, support aging and disabled veterans, and honor those who continue to serve others even in their later years.
