Literacy Volunteers of Coconino County/The Literacy Center

A nonprofit organization

The mission of Literacy Volunteers of Coconino County is to increase the basic English language and literacy skills of adults, teens, and families in order to improve the quality of personal, economic and community life for all. Professionally trained volunteers carry out our mission at The Literacy Center and in the community.

Serving nearly 400 learners every year with our team of over 100 volunteers, we offer English as a Second Language (ESL) and GED prep classes, one-to-one tutoring support, and drop-in tutoring. We also provide employment-literacy focused classes for male and female inmates at our local jail. We help our learners to improve their English skills, gain employment, receive U.S. citizenship, and to read to their children for the first time.

Testimonials

Our learner achievements are the foundation of our organization's success. This year alone, we have helped two of our learners receive their U.S. citizenship by providing the necessary support to help them pass the exam. Six of our learners have gained employment and one of our learners wrote his son's name for the very first time. Every time our learners make achievements such as these, they become better parents, better employees, and empowered community members. Increasing literacy and opportunities for education for all help to create stronger communities for all of us.
