Teen Lifeline: Saving Lives and Strengthening Teen Mental Health in Arizona
Every day, teens in Arizona face overwhelming challenges. Too many feel alone. Too many consider ending their lives.
Teen Lifeline exists to change that.
Since 1986, we have been on the front lines of teen suicide prevention, providing life-saving support, building resilience, and creating communities where every young person feels seen, heard, and valued. This year, we celebrate 40 years of showing up for Arizona’s teens when they need it most.
Why Teen Lifeline Works
What makes Teen Lifeline different is simple and powerful: teens helping teens.
Young people often open up most to someone who truly understands them. Our peer-driven model connects teens in crisis with trained Peer Counselors who meet them with empathy, respect, and real understanding, all under the supervision of licensed clinicians and grounded in proven, evidence-based practices.
What We Do
24/7/365 Peer Crisis Hotline & Texting Service
Our free, anonymous, and confidential hotline and text line provide immediate support for teens facing everything from stress and family conflict to self-harm and suicidal thoughts. Each year, Teen Lifeline answers tens of thousands of calls and texts, each one representing a young person choosing to reach out instead of suffering in silence. Over our history, that adds up to more than half a million moments of connection and care.
Life Skills Training of Peer Counselors
Behind every call is a trained teen ready to listen.
Our Peer Counselors, ages 15–19, complete over 80 hours of intensive training to build the skills needed to support others in crisis. In the process, they grow into compassionate leaders, carrying these skills into their schools, families, and communities.
But the impact goes both ways. This experience is often life-changing for the teens who serve as Peer Counselors, building confidence, purpose, and a deep sense of connection.
As one Peer Counselor shared:
"I became a Peer Counselor because I wanted to give other teens a place where they can find hope. And I stayed because I found that space for myself, too."
Community Education and Suicide Prevention
Prevention starts long before a crisis.
We partner with schools, families, and communities to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and equip people with the tools to support teens. Through presentations, events, and our School ID Initiative, we make sure help is always within reach. Together, this work across Arizona weaves a supportive network of trained individuals who can recognize when a teen is struggling and know how to help.
Last year, we reached over 400,000 people, spreading a message that no teen is alone.
Caring Contacts: Support After Crisis
The period after hospitalization is one of the most vulnerable times in a teen’s life. When a young person leaves inpatient care, the structure and support they relied on can suddenly disappear, even as the challenges they face remain.
Teen Lifeline’s Caring Contacts program bridges that gap.
Through ongoing texts, calls, and handwritten notes during the first year after discharge, we provide consistent, compassionate connection during a critical time. These simple but meaningful touchpoints remind teens that they are not alone, that someone is thinking about them, and that their life matters. By maintaining this connection, we help reduce isolation, reinforce hope, and lower the risk of future crises, offering a steady presence when it’s needed most.
Free. Accessible. Life-Saving.
Every service we provide is completely free. Because when a teen is in crisis, cost should never be a barrier to getting help. Your support makes this possible.
