The Circle That Stayed With Him
At 14, he kept his head down and his guard up. School felt like something to get through, not a place to belong. Like many young people, he had learned to keep things in, anger, stress, disappointment, because there weren’t many spaces where it felt safe to let it out.
When he was invited to join Boys to Men Tucson, he wasn’t sure what to expect. At first, he barely spoke. He listened. Watched. Tried to figure out if it was real.
Over time, something shifted.
He began to hear others speak openly about their experiences, without judgment, without pressure. Slowly, he started to share too. He learned how to name what he was feeling, how to pause before reacting, and how to communicate in ways that didn’t escalate conflict.
Those skills didn’t stay in the circle, they showed up in his everyday life.
Today, he’s working, staying engaged in school, and showing up differently in his relationships. He uses what he learned in circle, self-awareness, emotional regulation, and communication, to navigate challenges and make thoughtful decisions. He’s even begun supporting younger youth, modeling what it looks like to lead with awareness and intention.
His story is not unique, but it is powerful.
There are many more young people who need a space like this.
