This fundraiser will support the final logistics for the first ever Hopi Dementia Education Symposium and support the future events as our hope is to make this an annual event for the Hopi-Tewa community.

Your support will allow us to bring much needed education and resources to caregivers, families, service providers and the general public.

The purpose of the symposium is to provide education, awareness, and resources regarding dementia and Alzheimer's disease, particularly for tribal elders and their families. This event will empower caregivers, healthcare professionals, and community members with essential knowledge to improve care and create a supportive environment for those affected by dementia and Alzheimer's within the community.

Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia are increasingly impacting aging populations across the nation, including Native American communities. The Hopi Tribe has a growing population of elders who are at risk for these conditions. Unfortunately, there is a lack of culturally relevant resources, training, and support specifically designed for tribal communities.

Dementia and Alzheimer's disease often go undiagnosed or misunderstood, and caregivers are frequently left without sufficient training or resources. This lack of support leads to increased isolation for affected individuals and their families, as well as emotional, physical, and financial stress for caregivers.

In response to this pressing need, this symposium will focus on providing the following:

  • Education on Dementia and Alzheimer's disease including early signs, diagnosis, treatment, and care strategies,
  • Cultural competence in caregiving, emphasizing traditional healing practices and approaches that honor tribal values.
  • Community engagement to reduce stigma and promote a compassionate environment for those living with dementia.
