Black Folx Rock was born from a group of Black women who wanted to create first-time opportunities to learn rock climbing and adventure therapy together. As this group formed, more and more community members showed interest and in 2021 Black Folx Rock was born! This year, BFR contracted its first dedicated instructor!
✨How is Black Folx Rock different from other outdoor recreation spaces?✨
🌿Happy you asked!
We are open to everyone, but we center Black Folx to acknowledge the historical exclusion of Black people and other marginalized communities from outdoor spaces and prioritize creating a welcoming and supportive environment for them. We hire BIPOC instructors who teach our members with a culturally competent lens. We pay these instructors fair wages that respect their expertise. Additionally, we don't believe accessing nature should be a privilege. This programming is free for those who participate, with a suggested donation option for those who can give.💰
Let's talk about some of our activities! We explore indoor rock climbing, paddleboarding🚣 and camping⛺! All these activities are offered to participants at an introductory level. This year, we will take folks to Los Angeles to learn surfing🌊!
