The mission of The Literacy Center is to improve the quality of personal, economic, and community life by addressing the literacy and/or immigration legal needs for adults, children, and families in an accessible and affordable manner. We aim to promote a safe, inclusive, and just community. Professionally trained volunteers carry out our mission at The Literacy Center and in the community.

We remain the only privately funded adult literacy and education organization in Northern Arizona since 1992. Serving nearly 400 adult and youth learners every year with our team of over 100+ volunteers, we offer English as a Second Language (ESL) and GED prep classes, one-to-one tutoring support, and early intervention programs in local schools. We also provide immigration legal services through our NAILS program. We help our learners to improve their English skills, gain employment, receive U.S. citizenship, and to read to their children for the first time.

Testimonials

We change lives and strengthen our community one learner at a time. Our learner achievements are the foundation of our organization’s success. Throughout the year, we’ve supported individuals in reaching meaningful milestones—whether advancing their education, securing employment, starting a business, gaining citizenship, or developing the confidence to read with their children. These accomplishments empower learners to become stronger parents, more capable employees, and more engaged community members. By increasing literacy and expanding access to educational opportunities, we help build a more resilient and thriving community for everyone.
