The Coalition of Blacks Against Cancer (CBAC) is an Arizona 501c3 nonprofit organization whose mission is To empower cancer survivors, their supporters, and the community through education, support, and advocacy. Our vision is that every community member has access to the resources, knowledge, and support they need to reach optimal health and well‑being.
How We Got Started
The Coalition of Blacks Against Cancer (CBAC) grew out of conversations in early 2009 between Mayo Clinic leaders Dr. Michele Halyard and Marion Kelly, who recognized that Black patients faced unique medical and cultural challenges that contributed to poorer cancer outcomes. They saw a clear need for high‑quality, culturally relevant cancer education within the Black community.
As active members of the Phoenix Chapter of The Links, Inc., and Sigma Pi Phi, Gamma Mu Boule, they mobilized support from their networks. Their first educational program, held in October 2009 and attended by 100 community members, confirmed the urgency of this work. A follow‑up meeting with 75 Black community leaders solidified the commitment to create a formal organization.
Originally launched as the Coalition of Blacks Against Breast Cancer (CBBC) in 2010, the group began hosting annual events and monthly survivor meetings in January 2011. As the needs of the community expanded, the organization expanded to incorporate prostate cancer and evolved into the Coalition of Blacks Against Cancer (CBAC), broadening its mission to expand support to individuals affected by various types of cancer.
Why Is This Our Focus?
Across the United States, Black individuals experience disproportionately high cancer mortality rates and are often diagnosed at later stages. These disparities stem from a combination of biological, environmental, cultural, and systemic factors.
CBAC exists to confront these inequities head‑on.
Through our website, social channels, monthly meetings, outreach initiatives, and educational programming, we provide accurate, current, and culturally grounded information to help individuals make informed decisions about their health. Our work ensures that Black cancer survivors—and the broader community—have access to the knowledge, support, and advocacy they need to thrive.
