Art Heals Arizona (formerly Free Arts)

Art Heals Arizona (formerly Free Arts for Abused Children of Arizona) was founded in 1993 by art therapist Margaret Beresford. She was inspired by California art therapist Elda Unger, who launched the first Free Arts in Los Angeles in the 70s. Elda and Margaret recognized the positive impact that engaging in artmaking, in partnership with supportive adults, has on children. The foundation of Art Heals Arizona’s programs is to convene and connect adults who care for these children, providing them with artistic and trauma informed resources and opportunities to learn and grow.

Art Heals Arizona now serves approximately 8,000 children in out-of-home care each year. Last year, we served 7,140 children and teens and 359 families, focusing on those directly involved in the foster care system.  

Why Art Heals Arizona?

The mission of Art Heals Arizona is transforming children’s trauma to resilience through the arts.

 In a system that is filled with trauma, neglect, and instability, Art Heals Arizona works with our community to develop safety and self-expression. In fact, according to the most recent report, 90% of children/teens who received our services reported an increase in feelings of safety. Once children feel safe, they develop better coping skills stronger relationships with caring adults and can begin to return to well-being. 

There are many vital services that focus on the immediate needs of children and teens in the foster care system, however  Art Heals Arizona focuses on addressing children’s need for a creative-outlet, caring adults, and regulation while also developing long-term skills of bravery and the capability to reach resilience. 

We partner with approximately 40 social service agencies at more than 120 locations and 20 arts and culture organizations throughout the state of Arizona to provide a unique combination of arts, trauma-informed curriculum, and mentoring to children who are touched by the foster care system. 

Over the past two years, Art Heals Arizona has taken exciting steps to expand our programs to serve families in kinship and adoptive care as well as children, teens, and families in Pima County.
