ALS Arizona provides services and support to patients suffering from ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. These include patient and family services and programs, community outreach, and research. ALS is 100% fatal with no known cause, cure, or effective treatment. Upon diagnosis, patients have only 2-5 years to live, and expenses for living with ALS average $250,000 annually.
ALS Arizona provides numerous programs to ALS patients and their families all free of charge. Some of our programs include:
• Medical Equipment Loan Closet: patients are loaned medical equipment ranging from power wheelchairs and lift chairs, to speech communication devices and bathroom equipment.
• Transportation Program: transportation is provided to medical appointments for patients who can no longer drive or those who do not have handicap accessible vehicles.
• Respite Program: assistance is provided for respite care to family caregivers of patients, allowing the caregiver an opportunity to take a time out for much-needed renewal.
• Multidisciplinary Clinics: clinics facilitate one appointment where patients meet with multiple healthcare providers such as: neurologist, physical therapist, occupational therapist, dietitian, social worker, speech pathologist, respiratory therapist and an ALS Arizona care services coordinator.
• Home Visits: One of our care services coordinators evaluates the patient's home to make recommendations for equipment and explains the many useful resources available through ALS Arizona.
• Support Groups: ALS Arizona has many support groups throughout the month for patients, caregivers, caregiver survivors and others coping with their loved ones diagnosis.
"Without The ALS Arizona Chapter I don't know how our family could survive. The help from the Child Life Specialists helped us prepare our children in ways we never would have known, the loan closet saved us when insurance couldn't or was taking too long. Our young children are able to see the good in this awful disease because of the efforts of the ALSA here in Arizona. THANK YOU!!"
"At one of the darkest times our family has ever faced, The ALS Association Arizona Chapter has been like a ray of light helping to guide us. The hope, support, training, and genuine care from all of the staff we have encountered since my Dad's diagnosis has been absolutely exemplary."
"It's the combination of items: the activities for patients, the training sessions for caregivers, the loaner equipment, a friendly voice on the end of the line. It all helps make a devastating disease more manageable."
