Southern Arizona Cat Rescue (SACR) is a 501c3 nonprofit organization founded in October 2019. We're a foster home based rescue with fosters throughout Tucson, Oro Valley & Sahuarita. With more than a dozen founding members, we are a unique crew of animal lovers from all walks of life. We are dedicated to saving the lives of Southern Arizona's at-risk cat and kitten population. With 80% of kittens born outside each year, we strive to save all those in need and ensure mother cats are never left behind through the practice of TNR (Trap Neuter Return) or adoption if applicable. Our focus initially was on neonate kittens and moms with babies, taking in other various ages as we could. However, over time we were able to expand the numbers of each age group and in present day, we help any in need as we have the capacity for with our foster homes and finances.
Since we started, we have helped over 3,600 cats and kittens of various ages, health conditions, and origin scenarios. We often intake cats and kittens from the streets of Tucson, but are heavily involved with various shelters in Southern Arizona. Besides the main Tucson shelter Pima Animal Care Center, we also help those in Yuma, Bisbee, Nogales, and Pinal County. If we have the means, SACR also pulls from Phoenix and even other states in need.
With our outstanding team of volunteers and the support of our community, we are able to take on many medical cases, including some of the most rare or more complicated. We are grateful to have connections with some of the most outstanding veterinarians in Tucson who help our mission and stay curious with us through some of the most challenging cases. Some of the most notable include: juvenile bilateral cataract surgery, a hypothyroidism in a kitten with the help of an ongoing UC Davis study, feline Valley Fever survivors, a confirmed pituitary dwarfism case, and a plethora of special needs kitties of various neurological conditions from hind end paralysis, Cerebellar Hypoplasia, and a successful meningitis case, to an almost 3 year old hydrocephalus cat!
In July of 2024, we finally opened our first brick and mortar, Hunter's Kitten Lounge. This is a relaxing, home-like setup where adoptable kitties reside and locals can visit! On top of being open 6 days a week, events are hosted monthly. Every piece of the lounge was put together by our team of awesome volunteers. The vision was a place to help even more cats and kittens in need, with a vibe for the customers to support mental health and allow everyone to feel welcome. Since opening, as of March 2025, we are over 200 adoptions.
