Scottsdale Sister Cities Association Inc. is a 501c3 corporation under contract to the City of Scottsdale to manage Scottsdale's sister city relationships. We were incorporated on January 13, 1983, although we began working in 1969.
In 1956, President Dwight D. Eisenhower launched a program known then as the Town Affiliation Association of the United States, more commonly now called Sister Cities International. This original movement created the possibility that local governments and citizens could bring together many cultures outside their worlds; the motto was "The Sisterhood of Cities Leads to the Brotherhood of People." Each Sister City program requires an agreement, signed by the Mayors of each joining city, as a declaration of commitment that each city will build continuous and meaningful relationships through shared experiences in each other's city. Scottsdale's involvement began in 1969 with Alamos, Sonora, Mexico. This relationship remains strong and vibrant 53 years later. Cairns, Queensland, Australia, followed in 1987; Kingston, Ontario, Canada, in 1994; Interlaken, Switzerland, in 1999; Haikou, Hainan, China in 2010; and Marrakech, Morocco, in 2011. The sister city relationship with Uasin Gishu, Kenya was approved unanimously by Scottsdale's City Council in December 2013; the agreement was signed in March 2014 by Scottsdale's Mayor Jim Lane and Uasin Gishu's Governor Jackson Mandago.
