LOOKOUT is a multi-disciplinary organization that's mission is to deliver fearless journalism, content, and events with the unified purpose of improving and expanding LGBTQ+ representation on the local news stage, and building strength and engaging LGBTQ+ communities (and their allies) in the queer experience.
Our vision is to inspire and hasten a queer experience that's liberated from injustice and delivers on the promise of equal respect, rights, and opportunity for all people - while also holding those who perpetuate queer domination to journalistic account.
LOOKOUT was founded in December 2022 in response to the critical state of queer-focused journalism in Arizona. Our research shows local news coverage of queer people and issues affecting them has declined outside of the election cycle or Pride month. News that actually gets reported often excludes perspectives of community members or highlights only extreme viewpoints. Compounding these concerns is the proliferation of false or misleading websites and social media featuring AI-generated content and biased coverage, creating a misinformed or low-informed voter base.
LOOKOUT is Arizona's only news source dedicated to reporting on issues important to LGBTQ+ individuals, allies, and supporters. We provide deep analysis on what is happening on local queer issues, while also elevating solutions and problem-solvers within our community and holding bad-faith actors to account.
Through multiple listening sessions, community surveys, and a statewide ambassador program, we have learned our community wants accountability and fact-driven news, and they want to know how to get involved.
Our news is completely free to the public - our quarterly magazine is free and accessible throughout Arizona, and there are no paywalls or conditions on reading our newsletter or online stories. We have a collaborative - not competitive - news model, partnering with new and established newsrooms and outlets to publish our work and reach larger, more diverse communities. We cover the beats that are most important to the queer community: politics, education, health, safety, and business.
To ensure we can meet the demand of our growing queer community, LOOKOUT has ambitious goals for expanding our journalistic staff. By 2025, we are aiming to increase our staff from two to eleven employees, triple our freelance writers, and expand our recently launched internship and fellowship programs. This growth is crucial if we hope to realize our vision of equal respect, rights, and opportunity for all people through fearless, fact-based journalism highlighting the LGBTQ+ experience.
