Doreen Katz Memorial Cancer Foundation

A nonprofit organization

The Doreen Katz Memorial Cancer Foundation is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization dedicated to helping children whose parents are battling cancer. Working with the hospitals located in the areas where we operate, the Foundation helps the children when their parents are diagnosed with any form of cancer. This help is in the form of grants for education and general support.

The Doreen Katz Memorial Cancer Foundation (DKMCF) was established to serve children whose parents are either battling cancer or have lost that battle to ensure that they have a chance at a full education and therapy so that they can continue to grow up to become productive members of society. Founder, Adam Katz, has spent 19 years in Metro Denver since separating from the United States Navy. During his time in the Navy, Doreen passed away after a 6 month battle with Breast Cancer. When Adam moved to Denver, he quickly became involved with many volunteer activities in the community. Starting with Griffith Centers for Children, the Denver Children's Museum, Avon Walk for Breast Cancer and Brent's Place. He noticed there was plenty of help for children fighting cancer or adults fighting cancer, but there wasn't a great deal being done for children when their parents have been diagnosed with cancer. Adam believed that his background of volunteer work created a solid network of support in Denver to justify leaving work as an Accountant in the oil and gas industry in order to aid in this vital area of child development. Now in our 7th year of operations, the Foundation is currently working with thirty-three families in Colorado, Arizona and Illinois and expects to continue to grow into the future. In addition, the foundation is now strengthening its therapeutic offerings with a new Equine Assisted Therapy program, music therapy and will be introducing an animal assisted therapy program in house during 2019 as well as art therapy in all of our operating areas.

The Foundation started a branch in Arizona in 2017 and is currently working with 4 families providing funds to cover whatever a school charges directly to families, K-12, and also providing a therapist to each family so the children have a voice outside the home during a very difficult time.

Testimonials

I haven't sent you a thank you until today because I really don't even know where to start.

First of all, the help with grief therapy for C has been absolutely a gift for us. I see C dealing with R's death better and better every day thanks to K, and the help from you, and your foundation. We would not have been able to provide this for C without your help….Thank You Adam!

Then the Christmas gifts on top of the grief therapy, was really above and beyond anything we could have imagined. The gifts are so nice Adam, and sooo many! C was amazed when he woke up Christmas morning, "These are all for me?" We haven't put the space capsule together yet… but I cant wait! And the clothes all fit. He LOVED the star wars gloves! Everything! The Legos! The Star Wars ships, all of it was pretty overwhelming for all of us. We truly are so grateful for everything. I'm not sure how R first came to know you (I've been meaning to ask you that), but we see you much like a guardian angel.

Please share this with the rest of your foundation, and know that we appreciate everything you have done for us, for C, every day.

This holiday season was also bittersweet because we were thoroughly spoiled by a new foundation that has adopted our family. The Doreen Katz Memorial Foundation adopted our family in October. This foundation does a tremendous job of supporting children who has a parent that has undergone treatment for cancer. We are so incredibly thankful for the number of ways that they have helped our family. To start, they are covering the cost of full day Kindergarten for R. They will provide our family with counseling if necessary for our kids and as a family.

This Christmas, Adam, the founder and president of the Katz Foundation, along with two of his board members, came to our house and unloaded a large SUV with mounds of gifts that were donated by a group of people. If only I could have the opportunity to give each and everyone of them a hug, I would jump at the opportunity. The amount of joy and care put into each gift was unbelievable. I was left completely speechless and tearful as they unloaded the gifts into my living room. Here I thought getting on stage with Keith Urban was so incredible, but I have to say that the amount of love my husband and I felt that day and still today will reside in our hearts forever. The smiles and joy that came from my children on Christmas morning was one that I will always remember.
