The Asylum Program of Arizona (APA) provides legal representation for immigrant protection seekers who cannot afford an attorney to represent their cases for asylum or relief under the United Nations convention Against Torture, thereby protecting them from undue deportation and further persecution. We screen cases, assist with filings, recruit and negotiate pro-bono/low-bono fees with skilled attorneys to represent qualified asylum applicants, and help clients pay the cost of legal representation as needed.
Vision
We envision dignity, respect, and protection for immigrants seeking asylum in the United States.
Case for Support:
APA aids individuals meeting the international refugee definition by providing essential legal support that the government does not provide. Complex procedures often hinder access to protection, making legal representation critical. APA ensures access to justice for those in need.
2024 Accomplishments:
These services were provided by volunteers with a budget of less than $40,000.
Our History:
APA continues a 40-year legacy of providing crucial legal assistance to immigrant protection seekers. We've evolved from various nonprofit entities during that time, operating as our own 501(c)(3) organization since 2020.
"Running through darkness with anti-government separatists in hot pursuit, I fell to my knees and pleaded for protection," recalls Issac. But instead of safety, he faced brutal beatings and torture at the hands of soldiers. "They shocked me with electric cables until I passed out," he recounts.
Imprisoned in dire conditions, Issac endured frequent beatings and witnessed fellow prisoners being executed. "Living in fear, I fled to the U.S., seeking safety," he says. However, upon arrival, he faced detention. Once released, he lacked the means to secure legal representation.
"APA's support was a lifeline," Issac emphasizes. With APA's help, he navigated complex asylum procedures and secured legal representation, ultimately gaining asylum. "It felt like a big weight had been taken off... like I had wings and the opportunity to breathe and to fly," he reflects.
Issac's journey exemplifies the transformative impact of APA's work, offering hope and protection to those fleeing persecution. Your support enables APA to continue changing lives and providing safe haven for those in need.
