AUDIT USA

A nonprofit organization

The mission of AUDIT USA is to restore public ownership and oversight of elections, to ensure the fundamental right of every American citizen to vote, and to have each vote counted as intended in a secure, transparent, impartial, and independently-audited election process. Our work is non-partisan and fact-based. We promote strategic reforms that increase civic participation and voter engagement for a stronger, more representative and honestly elected government for the people, not corporations

Four companies provide the machines and software that count votes in 92% of the counties in the USA. The largest of these, which has just over one-half of the market, has not allowed an independent analysis of its software. The other three companies have been more forthcoming, but are not fully transparent. Over the past four years, AUDIT USA and other election protection groups have documented a number of instances of inaccurate vote counting due to human error or technological problems, including incorrectly-written software.

Voting machines provide a way for ordinary people to see if votes are being counted correctly if the materials they produce are retained as required by federal law. Unfortunately, around half of the 3,000 counties in the U.S. do not retain the digital records. In these counties, election protection advocates educate elections officials about the law. With education, election departments often decide to save all of the materials. And, if necessary, we file lawsuits demanding that officials follow the law.

In many states, people have a right to see those materials and can determine if votes were correctly tabulated. Most of the time, election protection advocates find that the vote tabulation is correct. But if the results appear to be incorrect, we bring our concerns to the election department, candidates, the media, and the voters.

If we can demonstrate that election results are accurate, we can help restore our democracy. If we find incorrect results, we can help ensure that the people who actually receive the most votes become our elected officials.

AUDIT USA is strictly non-partisan. We advocate steps that can and should be taken by all county election departments in the United States, not to benefit a particular party or candidate, but to benefit our democracy. It's not a matter of right or left, but a matter of right or wrong.

Voting is a secret process. Counting is a public process.
