Malpai Borderlands Group

The mission statement of the Malpai Borderlands: Our goal is to restore and maintain the natural processes that create and protect a healthy, unfragmented landscape to support a diverse, flourishing community of human, plant and animal life in our Borderlands region. Together, we will accomplish this by working to encourage profitable ranching and other traditional livelihood which will sustain the open space nature of our land for generations to come. "

The story of the Malpai Borderlands Group begins in 1991 as a group of ranchers and scientist began a grass roots effort to address problems collectively and find common ground in the "radical center". The group has worked hard over the past twenty-four years to acquire conservation easements on sixteen ranches within our planning area. The Malpai Group has also been involved in conservation efforts including the removal of woody species from grasslands through prescribed fire, working with landowners in the protection of endangered species and erosion control projects. The Malpai efforts in outreach include two college scholarship programs offered to local high schools and an annual Science Conference.
