Great Old Broads for Wilderness

A nonprofit organization

Great Old Broads for Wilderness is a women-led national grassroots organization that engages and inspires activism to preserve and protect wilderness and wild lands.

Conceived by older women who love wilderness, Broads gives voice to the millions of older Americans who want to protect their public lands as Wilderness for this and future generations. We bring knowledge, commitment, and humor to the movement to protect our last wild places on earth. Founded in 1989 by a feisty group of older women hikers, our members include younger women (training broads) and men (bros) - though most of our members continue to be older women committed to protecting wild lands.

For more than 34 years, Broads have defended America's public lands and waters. We work to designate new Wilderness areas and protect and restore wild lands. Broads lend our support to conservation partners, testify at hearings on land use policy, and write letters to agency staff, media, and legislators. Educating ourselves about wilderness issues first, we then educate the public and policymakers. We fight for the clean air and water that wilderness lands provide. We show up-and we have fun while we're at it!

Great Old Broads increased the feminine voice in the wild lands dialogue by encouraging older women to capitalize on their years of experience and assume leadership roles to advocate for protection of wild lands. Many Great Old Broads, whether due to physical ability or geographic distance, may never visit the lands they struggle to preserve. Nonetheless, they want them preserved for future generations.
