The Arizona Flute Society is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the enjoyment and appreciation of the flute. We support the local flute community by providing a wide variety of music education, performance, and networking opportunities for our members.
Your donation to the Arizona Flute Society (AFS) will provide funding to support a variety of educational programs, performances, and scholarships.
The AFS provides performance experience for flutists of all ages with the AFS Festival and Competition. As a festival registrant, players perform solo or in small groups for professional feedback. In addition to the feedback, competition registrants compete to win prizes including scholarships to the AFS Summer Flute Workshop.
The AFS also provides two flute choir opportunities for its members each year. The Alla Breve Flute Choir meets for two rehearsals and presents a free public concert in the fall and spring of every season. This choir has been selected to perform at the National Flute Association Convention on several occasions and recently began bringing in nationally known composers and flute choir specialists to work with the group and conduct. Commissioned works are being composed for this outstanding group, adding to the international repertoire of flute music.
June 2024 marked the 15th anniversary of the annual AFS Summer Flute Workshop. This educational program is open to flutists of all ages and levels. The workshop brings in top quality national and local artists to instruct participants, coach ensembles, and perform concerts. In addition to the workshop scholarships won by participants in the Flute Festival and Competition, we also provide several need-based scholarships to ensure that the workshop is accessible to economically disadvantaged flutists.
For the past 14 years, the AFS has sponsored Regional Etudes Masterclasses in the Phoenix metropolitan area for high school students auditioning for the AMEA Regional/All-State Bands and Orchestras. Professional flutists coach talented young flute players to improve their performance and prepare them for these important auditions.
The AFS is invested in fostering new repertoire for the flute. We have held an annual Composition Competition since spring of 2021, for which composers throughout the world are invited to submit their works for solo flute. The winning composer is awarded a cash prize, and they share their piece with AFS membership to play and perform for a year.
Additional educational classes and performances are often scheduled throughout the year and have included concerts and classes by renowned flutists. Some classes, such as the performance anxiety workshop, have been available to all musicians, not just flutists.
Please join us in providing support for our educational programs and scholarships by making a donation. The AFS is a 501c3 non-profit organization and donations are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law. Your donations allow us to continue serving flutists and musicians of Arizona in important ways!
