The American Cancer Society (ACS) is a leading cancer-fighting organization with a vision to end cancer as we know it, for everyone. We are the only organization improving the lives of people with cancer and their families through advocacy, research, and patient support, to ensure that everyone has an opportunity to prevent, detect, treat, and survive cancer.
ACS directly and measurably improves the lives of people with cancer and their families by focusing on the core area of patient support. We help people find answers and resources, whether they want to help reduce their cancer risk, understand a cancer diagnosis and treatment options, learn how to manage side effects, or find transportation or a place to stay at our Hope Lodge® communities when treatment is far from home. We work with health care providers, health systems, and public health organizations in the US and globally to reduce barriers for all people across the cancer care continuum, resulting in increased screening and vaccination rates, more effective patient support services, and greater access to treatments and pain relief.
An estimated 41,120 new cancer cases will be diagnosed in Arizona this year. Many of these individuals will need our help to access the care they need. ACS has extensive experience providing information, answers, and support to people in every community who have been touched by cancer. ACS has long-standing relationships with state and community partners that focus on the health and wellness of all individuals and communities throughout Arizona.
Through your support, we will continue to advance health equity by directly impacting under-resourced and underrepresented individuals in Arizona-people like John Doe from southern Arizona who need to travel frequently for cancer treatment. While John was receiving treatment for his breast cancer (primary) and brain cancer (secondary), his wife and caregiver was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. John was forced to leave his employment due to the side effects he was experiencing from his diagnosis. As her husband's primary caregiver, his wife was also obliged to leave her full-time employment for something part-time. Their physical, emotional, and financial hardships are numerous and substantial.
Through our Patient Transportation Grant Program, the hospital system provided the family a gas card, ensuring that John could continue the treatment he desperately needed and removing that burden from his wife.
